Preparing Your Home (& Heart) for the Holidays

The holidays are just around the corner - about 55 days until Christmas (but who’s counting?).

As a designer, I’ve always believed that a beautiful home isn’t just about how it looks - it’s about how it feels. And during the holiday season, that means creating spaces that welcome family and friends with warmth, comfort, and ease.

But here’s the truth: if you don’t have a plan, even the most festive home can start to feel stressful. That’s why we’re sharing a few simple ways to get ahead now, so that by December, you can slow down, light a candle, and actually enjoy the season.

1. Plan Now For Gatherings & Guests

If you’re hosting this year, start sketching out the details early - guest lists, menus, playlists, and décor ideas. Whether you’re planning a “Favorite Things” exchange or a cozy Christmas brunch, a little prep now goes a long way toward a calm, joyful celebration.

Designer Tip: When decorating, choose a soft, neutral palette and layer in texture: ribbons, fresh greenery, or a few metallic accents. Simplicity allows your home’s natural beauty (and your guests) to shine without feeling TOO over-the-top.

2. Make Your Gift List...& Check It Twice!

Write down everyone you plan to gift this year: family, friends, teachers, neighbors, and track as you go. It’s amazing how much lighter the season feels when you’re not doing a last-minute wrapping marathon on December 24th…or forgetting someone important entirely!

Designer Tip: Keep a running digital list year after year to note favorite gifts, sizes, and addresses - it becomes your personal holiday playbook!

3. Create a Wrapping Station

Designate a small, functional space for wrapping gifts - I love using a laundry room counter or spare table or room. Keep everything you need: paper, tape, tags, and ribbon organized and within reach.

Designer Tip: Use a storage bin or hanging organizer to corral supplies neatly. Wrap gifts as you go, then add bows or greenery later for that final touch. 4. Prep Holiday Cards Early

Now’s the time to choose your favorite photos and update your address book. Getting cards out early not only reduces stress but also gives loved ones more time to enjoy them.

Designer Tip: Save one of your cards each year in a keepsake box or binder. They tell a beautiful story of your family and home through the years.

5. Simplify & Savor The Season

Above all, remember…your home doesn’t need to be perfect to be inviting. What matters most are the people inside it and the times you create together as friends & family.

So here’s to the next 55 days: may we approach them with intention & creativity – and leave the overwhelm aside. Let’s design a season that feels as good as it looks – together!
